Child of the Land is written by a local Gainesville Tennis Pro – Lee (Sandra) Phillips – She lived in Hong Kong from 1989-1994.
After reading an article about dying rooms in mainland China she embarked on a journey to change the lives of the suffering infants. She ventured to the Chinese city of Zhaoqing, where she climbed the stairs of a prison-like cement building. On the fourth floor, she entered a world unlike any other. The orphanage smelled of urine and feces. The eyes of the abandoned children haunted Phillips.
But one child touched her heart more than the others – a girl named Yu Yan – Phillips was determined to adopt her. For Phillips-and the girl-the odyssey was just beginning.
